CHANEL turned her legendary eye to shoes fifty years ago and the fashion house that remains at the top is celebrating this year. Having launched her trademark and innovative LBD in 1926 and her quilted handbag in 1955, the designer broke with convention once more and the two-tone, toe-dipped sling-back slipper was formed in 1957. “The black, slightly square toe shortened the foot,” explains 
Monsieur Massaro, the house shoemaker at the time. “The beige melted into the whole and lengthened the leg. It was a very pure design, accentuated by the fineness of the straps. We rejected the idea of a buckle, which looked a little bit old-fashioned, preferring instead to add a little elastic on the low-cut inner side. This elastic adapted to the shape of the foot, adjusting its every tension and following its movement.” Coco’s own reasons for the design were simpler: it meant she could gallivant around doing what she loved best - playing sport and going on trips - without visibly dirtying her shoes. Legend has it she saw the black leather toe worn by staff on her friend the Duke of Westminster’s yacht and decided to copy the trend. “A woman with good shoes is never ugly. They are the last touch of elegance,” she used to say, along with the declaration: “With four pairs of shoes, I can travel the world.” Make that 400… To celebrate its half-century history, the two-tone is back this season in gorgeous flat and kitten-heel designs, available now from all Chanel stockists.

Chanel did the unexpected by presenting a black and white Spring 2007 collection that has 1950s elements but with a very futuristic bent.
It opened with all the models wearing a white lab coat, something you will expect a chemist or a cosmetologist to wear. And, if that will not astonish you, what followed will – a parade of minis and micro-minis that ranged from shift dresses to dress suits.
Now, that you’re awake, the swimsuits took an about turn with its 1950s silhouettes, something that Marilyn Monroe would wear.
Ready for the next surprise? It’s Star Trek time with beaded or sequined boy shorts and snug fitting short-cropped jackets worthy of a Star Fleet uniform, or better yet, Seven of Nine of the Borg.
