Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the U.S., to Address Graduates

A graduation ceremony for 13 female Afghan business owners who are completing a high-level, four-week business education and mentoring program at Northwood University will be held on Monday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Midland, Mich., campus’ Griswold Hall. Northwood University, in partnership with The Institute for Economic Empowerment of Women (IEEW), the United States Afghan Women’s Council and the United States Department of State, hosted the women. This is the second year for the Peace Through Businesses initiative at Northwood University.

Northwood University President Keith A. Pretty; IEEW President Terry Neese and Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, will address the graduates during the ceremony. Additionally, a taped message of congratulations from First Lady Laura Bush will also be played.

“Building on our history from last year, it has been amazing to see the effect of the program on the lives of its participants and those around them,” Neese said. “We anticipate the graduating class of 2008 will continue to create strong businesses and serve as mentors for other women who desire to achieve economic freedom.”

The Peace Through Business initiative began in 2007 and was an outstanding success. The nine women who participated are currently volunteering their time to encourage and educate others. While they did not know each other prior to their participation, they have established joint ventures and training modules for other local Afghan women.

“Stabilizing the Afghan economy is the path to personal freedom and democracy for the millions of people who live there,” Pretty said. “Empowering the women of the country is a major step in achieving that goal. Northwood University is honored to be able to play a continuing role in educating and mentoring these very brave women.”

Northwood faculty who are experienced in teaching entrepreneurial concepts and skills provide instruction in basic business skills, creating a business plan and capital formation. The second phase of the program will focus on long-distance learning and mentoring using technology to provide ongoing support and knowledge, helping the program participants to maintain their enterprises.

Northwood University conducts this training in English as well as in Farsi, the native language of Afghanistan. In addition, participants receive follow-up instruction and business consultation in their own languages (Farsi and Pashto) by electronic means as well as in hard copy format.

The Peace Through Business curriculum was developed by and administered by Dr. John Amin, an Afghan-American who received his degree from Kabul University and holds professor emeritus status at Northwood.

“This program is unique in that it will allow the participants to take their education and experience back home to share their knowledge with others, a critical component to building a system of economic health in Afghanistan,” Amin said.

Fight or Flee? Women Emigrate for Credit Security

Posted by Femina on July 31st, 2008
  • 87% have no plans of leaving their twenty-something lifestyle behind
  • 98% don’t think a sex life is key to a successful Relationship
  • 99% think of themselves over their man first

PLUS an outstanding 2 out of 5 women want to leave the UK for good

A staggering two out of five women want to flee the UK in pursuit of economic security, a new survey by Canderel reveals today. The state-of-the-nation study into 40’s and 50’s women also uncovers a new behavioural trend for this generation, focusing on wellness over sexiness.

Conducted by leading researchers, the Future Laboratory, the in-depth study has been commissioned by Canderel, the UK’s favourite low-calorie sweetener, to reveal the thoughts of this generation of women.

Finance

With over 50’s controlling more than 60% of the UK’s wealth, this generation is fiercly finance savvy. This should make Gordon Brown sweat as 41% of the financially secure breed is considering emigrating due to the current state of the UK’s economic climate. They are also four times more likely to plan a move abroad with their partner rather than considering financial growth and a future together in the UK.

Tom Savigar, Strategy and Insight Director from the Future Laboratory, comments: “The results show a really liberal attitude and a big shift in the UK’s concerns - compared to 10 years ago it is astonishing for such a high percentage of women of this age (41%) wanting to move abroad for economic security.”

Relationships

Contrary to the sexual appetite of Kim Cattrall (53), Sex and The City actress, who openly focuses on a healthy sex life, a massive 97.5% of women at the same life stage say it isn’t important in their relationship. The results reveal the key to a happy and successful marriage is spending less time between the sheets and more time catching a flick with your partner. Over 7 out of 10 women in happy relationships say that being a good companion with your other half is the most important factor.

Health and wellbeing

With the UK suffering from some of the highest stress levels in Europe, this generation has health and stress under control. 81% are hitting the gym, not only to keep fit but as a natural way to reduce anxiety levels. An enormous 83% say being healthy and fit is the most important factor, over looking young, feeling sexy or having a fab figure.

Off the treadmill and into the kitchen over half prepare and cook food from scratch, with 1 in 4 seeking locally sourced produce. Life is delicious as healthy experiences are accented with pleasurable experiences - with an overwhelming 85% indulging in sweet things.

Socialising

7 out of 10 women would rather abandon a quiet night in and hit the town with friends, or just as likely these days with their daughters. This generation is also embracing new technology, similar to twenty-something women, with over a half of them likely to be found gossiping and speed dating over the internet - underlying their independent and free spirited attitude.

A spokesperson for Canderel comments:

“As Canderel celebrates its 25th anniversary, it’s poignant that a new generation of women have been defined as independent, health conscious and above all know what they want and how to get it!”

National Orgasm Day 31 July 2008 - The 2008 Orgasm Survey

Posted by Femina on July 28th, 2008

A national survey into the bedroom behaviour of British women has revealed that a shocking 46% percent never or rarely achieve orgasm. The survey, conducted by Scarlet magazine and the makers of the PelvicToner to mark National Orgasm Day on July 31, polled over 2000 women across the country and found that women with better pelvic floor muscles were also enjoying better sex lives.

It has been known for nearly 60 years that a strong pelvic floor muscle is essential to achieve vaginal orgasm. When the muscles are stronger there is more friction and stimulation during intercourse and this naturally benefits both partners.

Arnold Kegel, who developed his exercise programme for the treatment of stress incontinence, published a 3000 patient study in 1952 that highlighted this link and demonstrated that ’sexually dysfunctional’ women taught a resistive exercise programme could achieve orgasm for the first time. Kegel was adamant that to be effective pelvic floor exercise had to involve squeezing against a resistance. Unfortunately this has never been explained to women and an effective exercise technique is rarely taught.

The PelvicToner(TM) is a progressive resistance vaginal exerciser designed to help women meet the fundamentals of Kegel exercise ie to identify and isolate the vaginal (pubococcygeal) muscle and then to exercise it properly against a variable resistance with the appropriate bio-feedback

Demonstrating and publicising the link between a healthy and strong pelvic floor and better sex will improve the general health and sexual wellbeing of millions of women, improve and restore millions of relationships, and will reduce the incidence of stress incontinence which afflicts half of all women.

Survey Results:

  • Nearly half of all women are not getting their share of orgasms!
  • The G-spot is not a myth. Women who cannot identify their G-spot rarely have orgasms
  • 75% of older women claim they have a G-spot, but a third of under 25s can’t find it.
  • Women with a ‘good’ pelvic floor have twice as many orgasms
  • Women who followed PelvicToner exercise programme reported a much improved sex life within 4 weeks

Survey results

  • Over 2000 sexually active women have already completed the 2008 Orgasm Survey
  • 72% say they are aware of their G-spot but its location varies significantly!
  • 50% place it just inside their vagina and 35% deep inside. The remaining 15% locate it elsewhere!
  • 46% never/rarely achieve vaginal orgasm during penetrative sex
  • Only 31% claim to do so often or always
  • 69% are aware that the strength of their pelvic floor muscle is implicated in the ability to achieve orgasm
  • 70% of women claim to exercise sometimes or often but 92% would like to be shown how to exercise properly.
  • Those women who rate their pelvic floor as good or very good, or who exercise regularly, are twice as likely to achieve vaginal orgasms as those that rate their pelvic floor as poor or very poor. (42% v 22%)
  • Two thirds of women who rate their pelvic floor as poor or very poor never or rarely have vaginal orgasms.
  • 42% of women using the PelvicToner said they became more aware of their pelvic floor immediately, rising to 85% within 2 weeks
  • 62% of women using the PelvicToner reported an improved sex life within 2 weeks rising to 82% after 4 weeks
  • 62% of PelvicToner users said that their partner noticed the improvement in muscle tone/tightness

relationship selling

Posted by dc on July 27th, 2008

I’m not one of those who love to attend social functions though my friends tend to perceive me as a very sociable work at home mom! Last week, I received an invitation to a beauty tea party by La Mer. The objective of the invite is to ‘welcome’ and greet the new customers of La Mer. Out of curiosity, I responded to be present at the tea party.

Nowadays, retail companies are focusing on relationship selling and this is effective with certain niche or exclusive products where the customer base is more targeted. I suppose that’s why you can find online retailers launching niche groups such as wine of the month clubs or beauty discussion groups where likeminded individuals can meet and learn from each other. Whether it’s an offline or online product, companies have to be innovation in the marketing and advertising efforts in this modern age.

Retirement Savings and Women

Posted by readabook on July 26th, 2008

According to a recent article in the business section in our local paper, women aren’t saving enough. Partly because we will live longer than most men. Also, statistics show we tend to invest more convervatively, start saving later and are in and out of the workforce more frequently.

Women live an average of 22 years after retirement versus 19 for men, and medical costs are rising, so women will need to save 2 percent more than men every year over 30 years to maintain their standard of living upon retirement.

Here are some of the interesting statistics from the article:

- Workers today will need to save 126 percent of their income each year to maintain their lifestyles upon retirement.

- 19 percent of all employees studied will be able to maintain their standard of living after retiring, without post-retirement medical subsidy from employers.

- 67 percent of workers are saving less than 80 percent of their projected needs for retirement.

- Less than 60 percent of large companies now offer defined pension plans.

I don’t think there is much we can do about being in and out of the workforce and sometimes it is really hard to save when we have unexpected expenses I do think though the information about women being more conservative investors is valuable. It makes sense to take a look at your investments and see if might be able to take on a bit more risk. Most people don’t realize that because of inflation sometimes very conservative investments actually yield zero gains.
