ranting from my home office

Posted by dc on September 30th, 2008

Today is the start of a 3-day long holiday for the Muslims who are celebrating Hari Raya (new year). I was initially looking forward to this break so that I can finish all my outstanding home office work but no, I’ll be busier than usual days!

Our relatives from the US are here and we’ll be doing lots of dinners and lunches. Then, we have a couple friend living for China and it’s another get-together dinner. My home office needs serious cleaning up, packing up and throwing out of junk! Then I need to contact a moving services company for my brother who is relocating. My little preschooler on holidays is pestering me on more water plays at the pool. It looks like my home office will be shut today and even tomorrow cos we need to be outstationed for a day trip to visit my brother in law.

I have a couple of internet marketing projects that I want to kick start but somehow, working with designers ain’t easy - they want to charge for everything - 2 similar looking design options and they call it ‘two design options as agreed’ - what a crap that is, I wonder. 2 design options should be ‘2 different designs and styles’ - a similar colour tone, a shift in left sidebar to right and a little touch here and there doesn’t mean a ‘different design’. It’s easy to fool anyone but not a graphic designer, which I have been practicing for more than 10 years! I sincerely hope that all web designers will be open, pro and honest to their clients. This would give them a good name, credibility and sound reputation in years to come.

Sorry that you have to hear this little ranting coming from my home office - it happens P

Office on Violence Against Women Awards US114 Million to Support Comprehensive Crime Prevention

Posted by Femina on September 30th, 2008

The Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has released more than $114 million in formula awards to 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories to support comprehensive strategies addressing violence against women, announced Cindy Dyer, Director of OVW. The STOP (Services, Training, Officers, Prosecutors) Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program (STOP Program) supports a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to stopping and responding to crimes of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

“The STOP formula program, one of OVW’s oldest grant programs, provides critical support to each state to enhance services to victims,” said Director Dyer. “Central to OVW’s mission is the strengthening of local efforts across the country. This funding to communities will improve coordination between law enforcement, prosecution and courts, and strengthen victim services.”

STOP formula grants are intended for use by states and territories; state, local and tribal courts (including juvenile courts); Indian tribal governments; local governments; and nonprofit, nongovernment victim services programs. Recipients are required to meet one or more of 14 statutory purpose areas. These areas include, but are not limited to:

  • training law enforcement officers, judges, court personnel and prosecutors;
  • developing, enlarging or strengthening victim services programs;
  • developing, installing or expanding data collection; and
  • developing, enlarging or strengthening programs addressing stalking.

By statute, OVW awards a base amount of $600,000 in STOP funds to each state. Funds remaining after the allocated base amount are distributed among the states based on population. The most accurate and complete data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau is used to determine the state populations. Indian tribal populations are not included in the population count. Attached is a list of the awards. More information about STOP can be found at www.ovw.usdoj.gov.

The Office on Violence Against Women provides leadership in developing the nation’s capacity to reduce violence against women through the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act and subsequent legislation. Created in 1995, OVW administers financial and technical assistance to communities across the country that are developing programs, policies and practices aimed at ending domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. In addition to overseeing 12 federal grant programs, OVW often undertakes initiatives in response to areas of special need, dedicating resources to develop enhancements in areas requiring particular attention or in communities facing particularly acute challenges.

the power of technology in the home office

Posted by dc on September 29th, 2008

Sometimes I sit in my home office reminiscing the good old days of childhood, teenage years and early adulthood. I thought the friends I used to know in college and even high school days then I wondered where had everyone gone to. In those days, we depended on the good old way of keeping contacts in notebooks and address books but through the years, people moved, shifted and left for greener pastures.

If you are hoping to locate a long lost friend whom you used to go to the library with or catch a movie on the weekends, you can now leverage on today’s powerful people search engine and locate that friend of yours. This is a free people search engine that allows you to enter the person’s name & state and hopefully, you can retrieve more information of that person. What’s cool about technology is that it provides more business opportunities to those who like to have a home office. If you haven’t tapped on its power, it’s not too late to start now.

First Female President of Liberia Receives International Women’s Leadership Award

Posted by Femina on September 25th, 2008

Opportunity International Honors President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Opportunity International paid homage to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia and Africa’s first elected female head of state, at a special awards ceremony hosted by the organization’s Women’s Opportunity Network at Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York today. The International Women’s Leadership Award recognized President Sirleaf for her distinguished career over four decades of fighting for freedom, justice and equality both in the private and public domain of Liberia and internationally.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

“President Sirleaf has provided outstanding leadership in the rebuilding of her nation, which has revived hope and increased stability in Liberia,” said Christopher A. Crane, president & CEO, Opportunity International. “The Women’s Opportunity Network recognizes the potential of women to make a difference — as leaders, clients, donors, supporters and mentors. Today, we honor President Sirleaf, a woman who is making a dramatic impact in her country and on her continent, and whose personal story of perseverance and leadership serves as an inspiration for women around the world.”

Speakers at the leadership awards ceremony included: Crane; A.T. Tshibaka, board of directors, Opportunity International, and retired senior executive, Citibank and Lloyds TSB Bank of London; Liesel Pritzker, philanthropist and founder of Young Ambassadors of Opportunity; and Dina Powell, managing director, global head of corporate engagement, Goldman Sachs.

“Opportunity International has brought women philanthropists and women business leaders together to hear firsthand about President Sirleaf’s accomplishments and to learn more about the needs of women and children in Liberia and other African countries,” said Ruth-Anne Renaud, vice president, women’s philanthropy, Opportunity International. “We are also showcasing the proven impact that microfinance loans can have to transform the lives of poor women in developing countries. Stories of real women who represent our 1 million clients demonstrate the tangible change that can be achieved through microfinance, and motivate people to get involved in Opportunity’s mission to end global poverty faster. Our experience is that when women hear these stories, they do whatever they can to help their poor sisters across the world.”

Women Who Will Shape the Future of Science

L’Oreal USA Announces Call for Applications for 2009 Fellowships For Women in Science Program

Fellowship Grants Increase in Value up to $60,000

L’Oreal USA announced today the start of the application period for its respected L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program. This national award program, now in its sixth year, aims to annually recognize, reward and support five women postdoctoral researchers. The awardees are U.S.-based researchers beginning careers in the life and physical/material sciences, mathematics, engineering and computer science.

As part of L’Oreal USA’s commitment to help women scientists achieve their goals, the grant awarded to L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women In Science recipients will increase in 2009 from $40,000 to a maximum of $60,000. The amount of the grant will be based on each candidate’s research experience as well as the quality of their proposal. The grant increase is a result of L’Oreal USA’s dedication to supporting women within the scientific fields.

The L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program launched in 2003 and has since awarded 25 fellowships to women scientists across the U.S. The application and review process is administrated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The program has attracted a number of ambitious researchers from diverse scientific fields, representing some of the nation’s leading academic institutions and laboratories. A jury of nine distinguished scientists — presided over by Dr. Ralph J. Cicerone, President, National Academy of Sciences — reviews the applications, and selects the L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science recipients.

The five L’Oreal USA 2009 Fellows will be invited to attend a week of events in New York City that include an awards ceremony, professional development workshops, media training and networking opportunities. Organized and facilitated in partnership with AAAS, these workshops encompass job search techniques, interviewing skills, budget development for grant requests and strategies for peer-reviewed publication.

The L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science is a component of the international L’OREAL-UNESCO For Women in Science program — which annually awards $100,000 each to five leading women career scientists — one each from Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America, South America, Africa and the Arab States.

The program also features the UNESCO-L’OREAL International Fellowships, which annually grant, over a two-year period, $40,000 each to 15 promising young women scientists, at doctoral or postdoctoral levels, from around the globe.

The L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program, and its aim to advance the careers of women postdoctoral researchers in the U.S., is especially relevant in light of America’s weakening competitiveness in the global marketplace. There is an urgent need to increase the funding for basic science research in the U.S., and also the number of students, particularly girls and young women, majoring in science, mathematics and engineering.

Earlier this year, L’Oreal USA commissioned a national survey conducted by Harris Interactive of adults and teens, to uncover attitudes and perceptions of women in science in America. Survey results found that 80% of adults believe that more women and minorities are needed in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related fields to best achieve scientific and technological progress.

L’Oreal also understands the need to attract more women to science and to raise awareness of their contributions to the field. Last year, L’Oreal USA launched its For Girls in Science initiative, as an extension of the L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program. The For Girls in Science program strives to engage, inspire and advance young girls’ interest in STEM. Young girls are encouraged to participate in hands-on after school science programs.

The L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science program is open to women postdoctoral researchers only. Candidates interested in applying may visit the L’Oreal USA Fellowships For Women in Science web site at http://www.lorealusa.com/forwomeninscience, to obtain more information about program eligibility and requirements. All applications must be postmarked by October 31, 2008. http://www.lorealusa.com/forwomeninscience

New Book Provides Brutally Honest, Touching & Funny Essays about Women in Their 40s

Posted by Femina on September 22nd, 2008

‘Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in Our 40s’ donates all proceeds to Breast Cancer Action Editor: Molly Rosen, MBA

From tattoos to affairs, from motherhood to mayhem, from battling alcoholism and eating disorders to everything in between, real women in their 40s aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. “Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in Our 40s” is a new book that brings together a collection of 32 essays from women from 11 states.

Available in October, “Knowing Pains” was conceived by Molly Rosen, who sought such an anthology when she turned 40. When none existed, Rosen took a hiatus from a successful corporate career to assemble the women who not only survived their 40s, but also thrive with dignity, courage and laughter. This includes:

  • Single mom Ona tries to balance an affair with two men
  • Lori learns about being a ‘geriatric mama’ at 40
  • Susan comes to terms with her eating disorder
  • Lauren copes with being a mother to three - and widow - at 40
  • Erin saves her mother from the bottle
  • Diane leaves her friends, career and family behind to live her 40s in Paris
  • Thea shares her struggles with infertility and politics

Starting in October, in honor of those affected by breast cancer, 100% of all book net proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Action (www.bcaction.org) to support breast cancer education and advocacy. Among the essayists featured in the book:

  • 89% have been personally impacted by the breast cancer epidemic.
  • 37% have had breast cancer, or a breast cancer scare.
  • 56% have had a family member with the disease.
  • More than 70% have had a friend or colleague afflicted with breast cancer.

Purchase: Available through Knowing Pains (www.knowingpains.com), Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Knowing-Pains-Women-Love-Work/dp/1595942548), Ingram (www.IngramBook.com), and local booksellers (list available at www.knowingpains.com).
