Chocolate Pear Cake

Posted by Femina on December 22nd, 2008

This dessert, a cross between a cake and a pastry, is baked in a thin layer and turns cake-like in texture as it bakes. It is very attractive to serve because as the batter rises it creates a frame around each piece of fruit. It
is great served either warm, topped with ice cream, or completely cooled. For 1 cake, 8 servings, you will need:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 c. butter or margarine
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 c. cocoa
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 pears, peeled, cored & sliced
  • Powdered sugar
  • 4 pear slices for garnish

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. For an interesting variation, use apples in place of pears, omit the cocoa and add 1 teaspoon cinnamon to the batter before pouring into pan.
  2. Cream butter with sugar until well blended.
  3. Add eggs and beat until light and fluffy. Stir in cocoa, vanilla, flour and salt, mixing well.
  4. Spread into buttered and floured 11 inch round shallow pan or tart pan with a removable bottom.
  5. Batter should be no more than 1/2 inch deep.
  6. Arrange pears over batter, pressing slices into batter to create an attractive overall pattern.
  7. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake is firm when touched.
  8. Cool and dust with powdered sugar. Remove sides of pan when ready to serve.
  9. Garnish with fresh pear slices.

New Inexpensive Women’s Condom Successful in UK

Posted by Femina on December 21st, 2008

UK response is positive - and new low cost prevention method in economic downturn is good timing.

Britishcondoms.co.uk announces the VA w.o.w. Condom Feminine(R) is selling well and receiving excellent responses from women customers. The largest UK online retailer of condoms considers the VA the finest protection of any condom available and a much-welcomed success. The VA women’s condom has been sold online in England since October. Britishcondoms.co.uk posts emailed quotes from customers on their website, along with short videos explaining the new VA.

Initial comments say, “all you ladies should give these a try”; “I love this new version of the female condom”; “gave these a try, really pleased I did”; “blokes love it as they don’t have to wear a condom”.

The first new condom for women in over 15 years appears clearly on track to create a fundamental change in protected sex in England and all over the EU, where the latex VA w.o.w. (worn-of-women) is approved for sale.

The response from women in the UK buying and sampling the condom for the first time affirms results from the 2007 clinical study data of 200 couples that found a 97% satisfaction rating from men and women in actual use. The entire clinical study is available on Britishcondoms.co.uk website.

Britishcondoms.co.uk and its distributor Intellx Inc. have provided samples to NHS offices, and expect to be shipping the VA to all NHS offices as demand grows. The ease of use, effectiveness and low cost (less than one BPS per piece in bulk) of the new latex condom begs to change the image of condom use among the younger generation. It is a product the distributor describes as sexy and fun to use, at a low price not so different from a high-end male condom.

The VA w.o.w., with a low-cost/high user satisfaction position in the health care system, makes it very suitable for social distribution in public health clinics in Europe, Africa and Asia. The national government of Portugal is one example, having already purchased and distributed the VA in their nationwide clinics. The VA is also distributed in Brazil and South Africa.

Stain Removal At The Office and At Home

Posted by WomanWork.Net on December 20th, 2008

Stain Removal From Clothings

I was watching a great PBS special called Haley’s hints and jotted down a few of the hints that could really come in handy when you are in the office. Most of the hints relate to stain removal. If you have a can a hair spray and a bar of soap you will be amazed at what you can do in terms of stain removal at the office. Some of these solutions require you rinse in cold water so you might consider keeping an extra white blouse or shirt at the office.

Remove Static Cling -Spray the area lightly with hair spray or take a metal coat hanger and rub it on static area.

Ink stains - Spray the stained area rather heavily with hairspray and then take a bar of soap and rub it over the stain. Rinse in cold water (hot water will set the stain) and stain is gone.

Make-up stains - same procedure as ink stain only make sure to rub hard with soap.

Deodorant stain - You know the awful white streaks your deodorant can leave on your clothes? Take a pair of pantyhose and bunch them up like a scrubbie and scrub the deodorant stain with it. The stain will come right off.

Grass stains - Put plain household ammonia in a spray bottle. Spray on grass stains and use a denture toothbrush to scrub stain. Rinse in cold water. Can also be used to clean muddy sneakers.

Pet hair removal - If the item you are wearing has some texture in it, you can take a rubber glove (you can keep disposable ones in your desk) and rub it over the pet hair. The pet hair will begin to stick together and you can roll it off your clothing. At home you use a rubber glove to “pet” your couch and the pet hair rolls right off.

Registration Now Open for Harley-Davidson’s 2nd Annual Daytona Women’s Ride

Posted by Femina on December 20th, 2008

Hundreds of Women Riders to Share Passion and Raise Funds for MDA

Last year in Daytona, hundreds of women riders joined together on the Harley-Davidson Daytona Women’s Day Ride and raised $67,000 for MDA. Registration for the 2009 ride on Tuesday, March 3, is now open with a limited number of spots available for women riders.

The Women’s Day Ride, designed to celebrate women riders, as well as generate funds for the MDA, is open to the first 500 eligible female Harley-Davidson or Buell riders who register at http://www.harley-davidson.com/womenriders before Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. Aside from riding together through the streets of Daytona, participating women riders are also encouraged to secure pledges and donations from their families and friends, which will be used to support the MDA’s Summer Camp programs across the country. For nearly 30 years, the Harley-Davidson family of dealers, employees, riders and suppliers has helped raise more than $65 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

“Last year the Women’s Day Ride was a huge success,” said Leslie Prevish, Women’s Outreach Manager, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “Riding down the road with hundreds of women riders was truly inspirational, and more importantly, we raised $67,000 for MDA. Hopefully this year, with the support of our generous female riders, as well as their friends and family, we’ll easily eclipse that mark.”

All participating riders will receive a 2009 MDA pin, as well as an MDA/Harley-Davidson bike flag. The top three fundraisers among the group will receive a Harley-Davidson jacket, and every rider who raises at least $600 will receive a special 2009 MDA Women’s Day Ride sterling silver charm.

Daytona Women’s Booth

Women have increasingly embraced the sport of motorcycling — seeking the freedom and control associated with the open road, polished chrome and a sweet sounding engine. In fact today, the Motorcycle Industry Council estimates that more than 12% of U.S. motorcyclists are women.

To help fuel that trend and encourage women to meet and talk about their experiences, the Motor Company is also hosting a Women’s Booth at the Ocean Center throughout Daytona Bike Week where experienced women riders or those just looking for information on how to get started can learn more about the sport. The booth will include bike lift seminars as well as information about learning to ride, “helmet hair” tips, healthy living while on the road and more.

Women that visit the booth will also have the chance to meet Karen Davidson, the great grand-daughter of one of the Motor Company founders, and are invited to share their riding stories or dreams of getting behind the handlebars by signing a banner featured at the booth.

What Else Harley’s Doing to Inspire Women to Ride

Harley-Davidson’s We Ride is a basic overview on what a new rider or a woman interested in riding needs to know about getting into the sport. It features information on how and where women can learn to ride with details on the Rider’s Edge New Rider Course and the best way to fit a motorcycle for a woman’s ergonomic and functional needs. It also includes tips on getting involved and staying active with riding groups, as well as inspirational stories from real women who have answered the call of the open road. The special 48-page riding guide is available for free download at http://www.harley-davidson.com/womenriders or for free shipment when you order online and can also be picked up at any local Harley-Davidson dealership.

Harley-Davidson dealerships across the country are hosting free women-only Garage Parties to encourage them to get involved in motorcycling. The Harley-Davidson Garage Party event provides a non-intimidating environment for women to learn more about motorcycling and to meet other women who are interested in riding.

working at home episode

Posted by dc on December 19th, 2008

I met up with some girl friends who always admire how I can have the privilege to work from home. They wondered why I didn’t put on lots of weight since I’m home bound most of the time. Personally I guess I will never need any dieting solutions like taking Fentraphen or weight loss supplements since I’m busy balancing between work and parenting most of the time.

Working at home compels me to a more discipline schedule and routine so that I will not procrastinate and be efficient in meeting work and parenting commitments. With less than two weeks to a new year, I look forward to another year of working from home as I venture into more online businesses.

Last Minute Bush Regulations Take a Parting Shot at Health Care for Women

Posted by Femina on December 19th, 2008

The Bush Administration issued final regulations that will dramatically change women’s health care. These regulations will enable health care professionals, organizations, pharmacists and insurance companies to refuse to provide health care services, information or referrals based on moral or religious reasons.

“With these regulations, the Bush Administration is allowing ideology to trump good health care,” said Dorothy Mann, Executive Director, Family Planning Council. “President Bush has waited until the very last month of his Presidency to take draconian and unnecessary measures that will profoundly change health care for women,” Mann added.

The regulations interpret three Federal laws that give individuals and institutions, which receive Federal funding, the ability to refuse to provide any type of service related to abortion for moral or religious reasons. This can include the provision of certain methods of birth control that are mistakenly considered abortifacients including IUDs and emergency contraception.

“The scope of these regulations are astonishing. Institutions and individuals in every community will be able to refuse to provide contraception because they mistakenly believe that certain methods of birth control cause abortion,” Mann declared. “The Bush Administration has determined that the availability of family planning services could depend solely on the individual whims and ideology of any health care provider,” Mann added.

As written, the regulations may override various state laws or regulations regarding contraception. In Pennsylvania, these regulations would, in all likelihood, invalidate recently issued state regulations governing the provision of emergency contraception to rape victims in hospital emergency rooms.

The regulations issued today were the subject a nationwide response with over 200,000 comments sent in opposition. “Protections already exist that carefully balance the rights of employees to religious liberty and we have every expectation that President Obama and Secretary Daschle will work quickly to rescind these regulations,” Mann said.

The Family Planning Council is a private, non-profit organization. It funds 28 local health care organizations including the region’s top teaching hospitals, community health centers, Planned Parenthood affiliates and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. These agencies provide high quality, comprehensive family planning services throughout the five county Philadelphia. Last year, 145,000 low-income women, men and adolescents were served through this network.

practical gifts for christmas

Posted by dc on December 18th, 2008

While cracking my head for some practical Christmas gift ideas I find myself browsing through the alternative health online stores. I know a close friend who is battling with weight issues and I am just not sure if it is wise to get her some diet pills.

Perhaps a botanical alternative medicine formulation which contains a blend of all natural herbal extracts developed to ease the transition and provide effective Menopause Symptoms Relief would be a better choice since she’s been going through menopausal challenges. After some research, I learned that Menozac has been developed as a natural alternative support product, formulated with the best-known combination of high-potency phytoestrogen botanicals. These ingredients were said to bring relief to menopausal symptoms, and supporting the body’s hormonal balance.
